About Outside the Lens
Outside the Lens™ (OTL) is a San Diego-based youth media literacy program dedicated to enriching and celebrating the visions and voices of children. Writers, poets, journalists, photographers, artists, musicians and teachers aim to teach literacy through the arts to at-risk youth (elementary to high school aged). Students tell their unique personal stories using photography, writing and other art forms while under the guidance of our trained educators in our inspirational workshops. Since January 2001, OTL has delivered its innovative and adaptable curriculum to more than 8,000 thousand children in a variety of educational settings including weekly classes within the city and county schools, after-school programs, summer sessions and workshops. Our programs focus on three central topics: the self (“Best Part of Me” project), the family (“Here I Am” project), and the community (“Community History” project). In addition, the children discover their relationship to the environment through our Ecoliteracy program and further their understanding by exploring their global perspective through our “Picture Me, Picture You” pen pal project.

Shooting the Day Away

Guest Speaker-Maite Agahnia

One of our classes had the privilege of spending a full class period with Maite Agahnia--local photographer, painter and graphic designer. She shared images from a 365 project she completed last July and shared photography and photoshop techniques she uses. She rocked it!

Learning the Elements of Design

Student created photos from a day of practicing the elements of design!

Learning Photoshop

One of our high school groups spent today learning photoshop basics. Their portraits sure looked professional when they were done!

Check it out! These images are being featured in an exhibition for a conference sponsored by the US-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership (BPP) and the Family Assess Building Network (FABN) in Texas next week. Congratulations to all of the students whose work will be on display!
