Over fifty families came out to take part of the OTL Help portrait event at Monarch School. Help Portrait delivered a photograph to each family that came out this past Saturday.

About Help Portrait
Help Portrait is an organization whose mission is to take a photo of someone in need, and bless them with a self portrait, along with a feeling of self worth. Help Portrait has spread to over fifty six countries, and has delivered over 101,000 portraits to people who need a sense of hope.

This past week, 13 teenagers from the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program came to San Diego from all parts of Iraq and the US. They captured video footage, took photos, and wrote the script to create a video focused on leadership in their lives. The participants also created diptychs! Check out some of their great work!

Outside the Lens's AmeriCorps V.I.P. Fellow, Rachel Lebowitz (Center), completed her year of national service on Friday! Rachel was awarded "Most Hours Served," "Most Social," and received the AmeriCorps award for best video, documenting "Life in AmeriCorps." Rachel will continue as a full-time employee at Outside the Lens this year!

These super heros spread the word about recycling in a cool and funny way!

This past week, Monarch School students K-12 directed their own short films to show off to friends and family. They learned how to get the perfect shot by using different camera angle techniques, and how to edit their own movie with iMovie and Final Cut. Once their film was finished, they created movie posters and autobiographies to share at the premier on Friday. On the last day, they proudly presented their short films to everyone, pleasing the audience. Each movie turned out amazing, and we had such a great time teaching the kids how to direct their own movies!

High Tech High Interns in Action

On Thursday May 26th the Outside the Lens team along with their three fabulous High Tech High interns Tony Anglin, Myriam Diaz, and Bianca Hernandez as videographers to San Ysidro High School. We traveled to San Ysidro to interview three highschoolers who participated in the Yeah! Project. Over the course of the year they successfully lobbied for and changed the menu at their cafeteria in favor of healthier options and are in the process of eliminating unhealthy snacks from the schools' vending machines.

Walk the Watershed!

OTL's Walk the Watershed event with San Diego Coastkeeper was a hit for the 2nd year in a row !

City Heights youth learned to use cameras to capture photos of the Pueblo Watershed in Swan Canyon (some of which you can see here).

The community came together to restore and learn about this habitat, eat tamales, watch a local dance troupe perform, and learn about environmental photography from OTL staff and volunteers. What a beautiful day to "walk the watershed!"

Walk the Watershed is Back!

Date: Saturday Feb. 5, 2011

Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Location: City Heights at Hamilton Elementary in Swan Canyon(2807 Fairmount Avenue)

Outside the Lens will help host the 4th annual Walk the Watershed restoration and education event! This event aims to increase awareness within the community about how residents can restore and protect the Pueblo Watershed. School students of all ages and community members walk a path through a natural canyon and nearby neighborhoods. We usually expect about 300 students and community members to Walk the Watershed, which concludes with a party including food, music and entertainment.

OTL Comes Together for the Help-Portrait Event on Dec. 4

Get your best Smile ready for the Holidays! Photographers and their assistants set up their stations for OTL's Help-Portrait event on Saturday, December 4th. Families will be coming in shortly to capture their Holiday portraits.

Ready to try out your skills at card making? Volunteers help get ready for the big day by setting up at the creative center. There's nothing like a personal, hand-made card to wish you a Happy Holiday!

The day is young as they patiently await to greet families and friends.

Radio Latina spends the day entertaining guests with music. Santa Claus also helps draw in new families with his upbeat, holiday spirit!

Finally, the photographers use their amazing skills to capture memorable moments for the Family Holiday Portraits.

TJ River Action Month Finale

OTL partnered with Wildcoast to document the San Diego community's concern for the Tijuana River Valley. San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox attended the Action Month's final event on Oct. 23, and recognized everyone's clean-up efforts. OTL displayed our photography project -- three poster collages depicting the poor condition of the coastal area. Thanks to all our volunteers and youth media crews that contributed to this photo-advocacy project!

Every Wednesday morning OTL staff visits Explorer Elementary to teach 3rd grade students about photography skills, workshops, and activities. During the last two weeks students have learned about vantage points and the elements of design.

Students had the opportunity to identify vintage points and elements of design from different pictures.

OTL participated at "La Jolla Art & WIne Festival"

Outside the Lens had an information booth at "La Jolla Art & Wine Festival" both Saturday-October 9th and Sunday-October 10th, 2010.

On Sunday, October 10th, Outside the Lens and the “Youth Media Crew” had the opportunity to document adult and children artists through photography and video. This crew of elementary school-aged kids had a short lesson on interview techniques and basic technical video/photography skills. They then walked around the festival taking pictures and interviewing artists.

Appreciating art and having fun at the Festival

Time goes by fast when you are having fun! Especially if it involves learning about photography and art.

The Youth Media Crew had the opportunity to interview and take pictures of famous artists such as, Robert Copple. Robert Copple gave them an overview of his paintings, talked about his inspiration towards art, the importance of art among kids, and the advice he gives to young artists.

Outside the Lens partnered with the Daraja Academy for a three week photography project that celebrates the visions and viewpoints of Daraja students. The Daraja Academy is Kenya’s first free all-girls secondary school whose mission is to cultivate a community of individuals with a sense of cultural awareness, social conscience, and environmental responsibility, while instilling talents that will enable them to open doors to a global society.

OTL kids with Phil Borges

OTL kids had the opportunity to appreciate and learn from Phil Borges' art work. His exhibition “Stirring the Fire," was displayed at the IPJ Fine Art Galleries of the University of San Diego. This exhibition was intended to inspired people to be part of a global movement to empower women and girls, mostly in developing countries, who have broken through barriers of tradition and oppression to become catalysts for change in their communities.
The exhibit is open Monday through Thursday 12 - 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and during Institute events.

Outside the Lens ran an eight-session healthy food and play project in conjunction with with the Network for a Healthy California (San Diego and Imperial Region). Through photography and writing, children from the Chula Vista YMCA at Harborside Elementary School investigated what is means to be healthy in their community.

We took field trips to La Bodega grocery store to take pictures of healthy and unhealthy foods.
